If you’ve been looking into book scanning, you must have come across the term “OCR scanning”. In this article we’ll discuss what that is exactly and why it’s one of the most important features of any document scanning software or app.
What is OCR scanning? What is it useful for?
OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition. OCR scanning technology can be used to identify the letters in any text that is scanned using technology.
With OCR scanning technology, any printed or written text that has been scanned into a digitized form is then entirely machine-readable. And being machine-readable means that it can be used for data processing, such as for searching for particular words or phrases within the digitized text.
Does OCR scanning take longer?
Unfortunately, we can confirm that OCR scanning does take longer than regular book scanning. The OCR scanning takes place after the scan is complete, and can sometimes use up scanner time for several minutes after each scan.
How long OCR scanning takes depends on factors such as image quality and language.

Does OCR scanning work for all languages?
OCR scanning can detect a wide variety of languages. What’s more, it can detect text characters not just on printed text, but also handwritten text also.
In addition, OCR scanning technology can be used to detect multiple different languages within a single scanned document.
Having said that, if you’re scanning a language that is not very common, you should check that the specific software or the type of book scanner you are purchasing supports that language.
It could also be that you are scanning an old book where the text is not clear or the font that was used is no longer common so the OCR will have trouble detecting the letters.
Book scanners with OCR scanning technology are typically set to detect all included languages by default, but it’s definitely something to consider before getting a document scanner.
You can also increase the efficiency of text recognition and detection by setting your preferred language. This can be particularly valuable when scanning handwritten text.

Some also feature Bluetooth technology, which enables the device to send the text, word for word, directly to other devices, such as a computer, smartphone or tablet.
Not only does it save you time and effort, it’s also 30 times faster than manual typing. What’s more, they can work with multiple languages on a range of different operating systems, and some can even offer audio, too.
